Subspecies and Distribution.
Falco concolor Libya, Egypt, Israel and Jordan to Red Sea and Parsian Gulf to Pakistan. Winters in Madagascar and SE Africa. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.35 cm, 350 g wingspan 80-90 cm.All grey and medium sized falcon. Considerably paler than dark morph of Falco eleonorae, slightly smaller, with more wedge shaped tail. Existence of purported dark morph from Red Sea zone now generally rejected. Juvenile very similar to juvenile Falco eleonorae. Habitat.Rugged desert areas with canyons, cliffs, or some small crags, hot, very arid zones, almost or without vegetation.In winter much wetter areas in open wooded country, savanna, marshy areas and paddyfields. Food and FeedingMainly small birds on autumn migration, as native vertebrate fauna is very rare in breeding season, Insects mainly in winter.Birds taken include small passerines, medium size birds such as Hoopoe, and small sea birds such as terns. Hunts alone or in pairs, birds mainly captured in air, flies low to flush prey. Hunts mainly at dawn and dusk. Breeding.Jul-Aug, with peak in migration of small birds.Solitary or in loose colonies, sometimes up to 100 pairs on islets in Red Sea and Gulf of Oman, in Negev Desert (Israel) 2-5 km between nests. Nests in cracks or hollows in upper part of cliffs, sometimes in old nests and sometimes in rocky or coral outcrops, or on ground under bushes. 2-3 eggs, incubation 27-30 days, mainly by female, male hunts alone until two weeks after chicks have hatched. Chicks have white down . Sexual maturity at 1 yaer old. Movements.Migratory, wintering mainly in Madagascar. Arrives in Madagascar from late Oct, last birds leave in early May, arriving in breeding areas mainly in Apr, in Israel from late Apr.Status and Conservation.Not globally threatened. Numbers of population are stable, 100 pairs in Israel where previously considered very rare .Israel.In Israel subspecies Falco concolor. Uncommon breeding summer visitor, rare passage migrant. |
