Descriptive notes.72 cm, 1,5-2 kg. Facial pattern and variable dark patch on breast distinctive. Female smaller. Juvenile lacks brown marks aroun eyes and on breast.Habitat.Favours a diversity of wetlands in open country, only shunning densely wooded areas also occurs on meadows and grassland.Food and FeedingMainly vegetarian especially grass, seeds, leaves and stims of plant also animal such as worms and locusts.Forages mainly by grazing on pasture and arable land. Breeding.Mostly during local spring or at the end of dry season.In single pairs, Nest of reed stems and grass, lined with down, on ground among vegetion in holes or in trees. 6-12 eggs, incubation 30 days. Chicks have sooty brown down white below. Sexual maturity 3-4 years. Movements.Sedentary over much of range, some local movements linked with availability of water.Status and Conservation.Not globaly threatened. Most widely distributed member of family in Africa.Israel.In Israel the subspecies Alopochen aegyptiacus Accidental visitor. |
