Descriptive notes.12 c, 12-14 g, wingspan 26-27 c. Smallest hirundine of west Palearctic with character and behaviour of Sand Martin, but rather more compact form.Both upperparts and underparts duller than Sand Martin, contrasting less and no chest-band. Sexes similar, no seasonal variation. Habitat.Low latitudes near southern limits of west Palearctic. Consequently tolerates much warmer climates, but exposed to oceanic influences in Moroccan breeding area which reaches up to Mediterranean climatic zone.No significant differences in habitat from Sand Martin. Food and FeedingNo much informatiopn known from west Palearctic, elsewhere, diet consists of small flying insects.Takes prey in flight, often over water, often breaks surface in dipping to catch low-flying insects. Breeding.Nov-Dec in Morocco. Nest in excavated tunnel in river or gorge bank, or side of road bank or pit. Building by both sexes.No information on number of eggs, sub-Elliptical, smooth and glossy, white. Incubation about 12 days, by both sexes. Movements.Morocco population sedentary, breeding durin winter. in East and South Africa, at least partially migratory though such movements not properly understood. In Sudan, apparently moves S after breeding in north of county.Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Extension of breeding range in Morocco.Israel.In Israel subspecies R. p. chinensis. Straggler, ringed and photographed in Eilat on 1985. |
