Eremopterix s. harrisoni a extrem S-E Sudan, and N-W kenya. Eremopterix s. signata S-E Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.Head, chin and throat chestnut, except center of crown, cheeks and ear coverts, which are white, hindneck white, dark brown smuge on upper mantle.Mantle and back saundy brown, tail brown, with central pair of rectrices paler and with broad, faintly reddish brown edge to proximal half. Breast, belly and flanks dirty white with broad dark chesnut line down center becoming broader and blacker towards tail. Legs and feet pinky flesh. HabitatPrefers short grass plains and stony semi-desert scru7b, although also in desert areas.Rare above 2000 m. usually on ground, some times perching on polk or low bushes. Solitary when breeding, but outside breeding season occurs in flocks of tens or occasionally hundreds. Food and FeedingLargely granivorous, mainly small grass seeds. Feeds mainly from the ground, rather than from vegetation.Breeding.Mid Jun in Somalia, May-Jun in Sudan, Jun-Jul in E Africa. Advertises territorywith fluttering song flight 6 m above ground.Nest, cup of fibrous grasses, in hollow in ground next to tuft of grass, rock or fallen log. 3-5 effs, white or pale buff, minutely speckled over whole surface with various shades of brown. Movements.Mostly resident, partially migrant.Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. No evidence of any marked range changes.Israel.In Israel subspecies E. s. harrisone straggler, recorded in Eilot fields near Eilat. |
