A. p. brehmorum W Palearctic from Portugal E to Turkey and from Morocco to NW Egypt including Canary and Mdeira Ia. Winters in Sahel. A. p. illyricus Dalmatian coast and E Italian coast. Winters in Sahel. A. p. pallidus Algerian Sahara to Middle East and Pakistan. WinterS in Sahel. | ||||||||||
Descriptive notes.Large and bulky swift with relatively broad blunt wing-tips, short, fairly shallowly forked tail, broad head an body.16 CM, 40-42 G, wingspan 40-45 cm.Brown, with white throat-patch. Race brehmorum larger and darker than nominate, with black-brown outer wing and saddle, smallest wing-coverts minimally paler, greaer coverts and inner wing distinctly paler, entire aead, lower back and rump geyer brown and forehead pale grey-brown. Race illyricus slightly larger and darker, with more distinct throat-patch as a result. Habitat.throughout much of range associated with coastal sites, but occurs in continental zone in Sahara. found around cliff-faces and gorges, though in many parts of range also in urban areas, where commonly breeds.Food and FeedingInsectivorous, Deat based on Hymenoptera 60% and others like Diptera, Coleoptera and Hemiptera.Gregarious, often associating with other swift species. Breeding.Mar-May in Israel, Morocco and Tunisia, Apr-May in Gibraltar. Colonial, nest in variety of sites, caves, cliff-faces, niches, eaves, under tiles, and holes in palms.2-3 eggs, incubation 21-25 days. Chicks brooded day and night initially. Movements.Southernmost and some Middle Eastern breeders resident, additional wintering in S Spain and as far N as France, but generally otherwise a medium distance migrant.Migrates through NW Africa Feb-May. Spring migration through Eilat, Israel, peaks Feb-Apr, with autumn migration May-Sep. Very common passage migrant in Djibouti. Present on Gambian wintering grounds Oct-Dec, but in some central N African areas some present all year. Vagrant S to South Africa. Status and ConservationNot globally threatened. Abundant in some areas.Israel.In Israel all the three subspecies brehmorum, illyricus and pallidus . Common passage migrant and scarce during winter in southern and eastern zones and common breeding summer visitor. |
