S. c. camelus W and S Sahara.
S. c. molybdophanes Somalia to Kenya.
S. c. massaicus Kenya to Tanzania.
S. c. australis S Africa.
S. c. syriacus Extinct.

Descriptive notes.

175-275 cm, 90-110 kg. White feathers of wings and tail. Females smaller and extrimely variable even within same subspecies.
Races separated on colur of bare parts, bald or partially feathered crown.

Habitat

A variety of open , semi-ared plains, from desert to savanna. also open woodland. Does not require standing water.

Food and Feeding

Herbivorous, taking grasses, seeds and leaves. Succulent plants very important in drier areas. Also eats some insects and small vertebrates. Feeds in groups, browsing close to ground.

Breeding.

Season and strategy vary with region. Nest is shallow scrape in ground, 5-11 yellowish eggs, incubation 42-46 days. Young have buff colored down with some black lines and specks. Sexual maturity after 3-4 years, withlife expecrancy of 30-40 years.

Movements.

Nomadic or sedentary, depending onhabitat. in dry seasons or dry areas may travel long destances in search of food and water.

Status and Conservation

Not globally threatened. Frequent to abundant throughout most of range.

Israel.

In Israel subspecies S. c. syriacus. Extinct between 1920s and 1940s. Today there are Ostrich in some "Ostrich farms".
